Frequently Asked Questions
What is the HK LPAT English assessment?
The Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (English) is an assessment co-administered by the Hong Kong Education Bureau (EDB) and HKEAA to ensure English teachers possess the required language proficiency. It is part of the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR).
How has the LPAT English changed recently?
Starting from the 2024/25 school year, the written and speaking assessments of the LPAT have been discontinued. Teachers now meet the LPR by obtaining an overall band of 7.5 or above in IELTS Academic, with no sub-score below 7.0. However, the Classroom Language Assessment (CLA) remains in effect.
What is the Classroom Language Assessment (CLA)?
The CLA is a practical classroom observation conducted by the EDB. It assesses a teacher's actual language use, instructions, explanations, and interaction skills in English during live lessons. Serving English teachers must obtain an 'attained' status in this assessment.
Who needs to meet the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR)?
All primary and secondary school English teachers holding permanent or temporary posts in Hong Kong public-sector, DSS, and local private schools must meet the Language Proficiency Requirement unless they are officially exempted by the EDB.
What is the passing score for the LPAT English?
To meet the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) via the historical LPAT, candidates must achieve Level 3 or above (out of 5) in each of the papers. For the IELTS Academic path, a minimum overall band of 7.5 is required with no sub-score below 7.0.
How can I prepare for the grammar and error correction parts?
Focus on analyzing common grammatical errors made by L1 Cantonese speakers (such as double conjunctions, subject-verb agreement, relative clause pronoun redundancy). Practice writing clear, concise pedagogical explanations explaining why a structure is incorrect.
