About the BTS Bâtiment Exam
The BTS Bâtiment is France's two-year national higher education diploma (Bac+2, RNCP level 5, 120 ECTS) for building construction technicians, site managers (conducteurs de travaux, chefs de chantier), structural drafting technicians (projeteurs) and estimators (métreurs, techniciens d'études de prix). The qualification was renewed by the arrêté du 21 novembre 2025 (JORF of 6 December 2025), which applies from the September 2026 intake for a first examination session in 2028; the previous 2011 référentiel runs to a final session in 2027. The official programme is built around eleven knowledge chapters covering the regulatory framework of a construction project, sustainable construction, the digital project environment, construction science under the Eurocodes, works and construction processes, management and communication, health and safety, site preparation and organisation, construction economics, setting-out and controls, and quality assurance. How is the BTS Bâtiment examination structured?

Has the BTS Bâtiment changed recently?
Yes. The arrêté du 21 novembre 2025, published in the Journal officiel of 6 December 2025, replaced the 2011 définition of the diploma. The new référentiel applies from the September 2026 intake and its first examination session is in 2028. Candidates who began under the previous programme sit the last session organised under the arrêté du 23 juin 2011 in 2027. The renewed diploma is registered at France compétences as RNCP41816, replacing RNCP39801, and restructures the professional assessment into four competency blocks: analysis and proposal of technical solutions, site study and preparation, project supervision and management, and quality control and handover.
What is the passing score for BTS Bâtiment?
Candidates must achieve an overall weighted average of at least 10/20 across all examination units to be awarded the diploma. There is no minimum mark on individual units. Candidates who are not admitted may sit épreuves de contrôle in the first half of July if they meet the published conditions, and unit marks of 10/20 or above can be carried forward (bénéfice des notes) for up to five years if a candidate re-sits.
How much does it cost to register for the BTS Bâtiment exam?
The académies do not publish an examination registration fee for the BTS. Registration is made personally online through the national Cyclades portal, generally between mid-October and mid-November for papers held the following May and June. Candidates still bear their own preparation costs, such as books, prep courses, or tuition at a private training institute.
In what language is the official BTS Bâtiment exam delivered?
The official national examination is conducted in French; the E2 unit separately assesses English at CEFR level B2. It is a study aid for English speakers and bilingual construction technicians, not an official translation, and it does not simulate the written papers, the oral defences or the practical assessment.
Who is eligible to sit the BTS Bâtiment examination?
Students who have completed the two-year programme in a lycée, a CFA apprentice training centre or continuing education are eligible. In addition, a candidate who has completed one year of professional activity may register directly as a candidat individuel without following the programme, sitting the units in ponctuelle form. The diploma is also accessible through validation des acquis de l'expérience (VAE). Candidates may sit the examination in the global form or progressively unit by unit.
What practical experience does the programme require?
The référentiel requires two work placements for students in the school route: a one-to-two week introductory placement on a gros-œuvre site in the first term of year one, which is not assessed, and an eight-week consecutive placement analysing the supervision of a project at the end of year one, which includes at least two weeks on a gros-œuvre site and is assessed through unit E7. Apprentices substitute their apprenticeship contract, and candidates presenting on the basis of professional experience substitute certificates of employment.
