Frequently Asked Questions
What is the TECFEE and who administers it?
The TECFEE (Test de certification en francais ecrit pour l'enseignement) certifies written-French competence for students in Quebec teacher-training programs. It is produced, administered and marked by the Centre d'evaluation du rendement en francais ecrit (CEFRANC) on behalf of Quebec universities and the Ministere de l'Education.
How is the TECFEE structured and what is the passing score?
The TECFEE has two components: a code linguistique multiple-choice questionnaire of about 60 questions completed in 90 minutes, and a redaction of roughly 350 words. Candidates must score at least 70% on each component (55% for the BEALS and BEPT programs), and a failed part can be retaken on its own.
What does the code linguistique multiple-choice section test?
The code linguistique evaluates orthographe d'usage, orthographe grammaticale (accords, terminaisons, participe passe), syntaxe, ponctuation, vocabulaire (anglicismes, paronymes, registres) and conjugaison. Most questions ask you to identify the faulty sentence or choose the correct form.
How much does the TECFEE cost and can I retake it?
The registration fee is set by each Quebec university administering the test, typically around 50 to 90 CAD per sitting; confirm the amount with your institution. If you fail one component, you retake only that part, and programs allow several attempts subject to their own rules.
