BA-T is a 4-hour hands-on field exam with oral questions and gated safety items; pass requires 70%+ AND completing every gated item. BSP Certificate of Knowledge is the written prerequisite. BA-T focuses on data collection: blower door (-50 Pa reference, CFM50, ACH50), worst-case CAZ depressurization (-2/-3/-5 Pa limits), combustion safety (9 ppm IAQ goal, 35 ppm ambient abort, 100/200 ppm flue CO limits), and ventilation flow measurement. BA-P does the analysis afterward.

About the BPI BA-T Exam
The BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) is the hands-on field credential for residential building performance work. Created when BPI split the legacy Building Analyst credential into BA-T (field) and BA-P (analysis) in January 2023, the BA-T validates that a technician can perform blower door testing, worst-case CAZ depressurization, combustion safety testing, undiluted CO sampling, and ventilation flow measurement following ANSI/BPI-1200-S procedures. The exam itself is a 4-hour proctored field assessment that includes oral questions and safety-critical gated items. Our 100 practice questions cover the underlying knowledge candidates need.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BPI BA-T (Building Analyst Technician) exam?
BPI BA-T is a 4-hour hands-on field exam with oral questions and gated safety items. It validates the technician's ability to perform blower door tests, worst-case CAZ depressurization, combustion safety testing, undiluted CO sampling, and ventilation flow measurement per ANSI/BPI-1200-S. There is no separate written exam — the BSP Certificate of Knowledge is the written prerequisite.
What is the difference between BPI BA-T and BA-P?
BPI split the legacy Building Analyst credential into two roles in January 2023. BA-T (Technician) is the field-data credential focused on data collection and diagnostic testing. BA-P (Professional) is the analysis credential focused on energy modeling and recommending upgrades. BA-T does not require BA-P, but BA-P requires an active BA-T.
What is the passing score and how are gated items handled?
Candidates must score 70% or higher AND successfully complete every gated item. Gated items include properly preparing the combustible-gas and CO measurement instruments and continuously monitoring ambient CO during combustion testing. Failing any gated item fails the entire exam regardless of overall score.
What are the prerequisites for the BPI BA-T field exam?
The BPI Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate of Knowledge is required before scheduling the BA-T field exam. BSP serves as the written prerequisite; it is a multiple-choice exam covering heat, air, and moisture flow. Field experience with blower door and combustion safety equipment is strongly recommended.
How much does the BPI BA-T exam cost?
Exam fees are set by individual BPI Test Centers and vary by region. Plan to budget for the BSP exam, the BA-T field exam itself, study materials, and any prep training. Contact your nearest BPI Test Center for current pricing.
How long does BPI BA-T certification last?
BPI BA-T certification is valid for 3 years. Recertification is typically achieved by earning BPI Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during the certification cycle or by retaking the field exam. Track CEUs throughout the cycle to avoid retaking the exam.
