The NAPLAN Numeracy test is the mathematics part of Australia's National Assessment Program, administered by ACARA to students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 each March. It assesses three content strands - Number and Algebra (50-60%), Measurement and Geometry (25-35%) and Statistics and Probability (10-20%) - using understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. Years 3 and 5 sit a non-calculator test of about 39 questions; Years 7 and 9 each sit about 64 items across a non-calculator section and a calculator-allowed section. Test time ranges from 45 minutes (Year 3) to 65 minutes (Years 7 and 9). There is no pass mark; results are reported on a scale against national proficiency standards. About the NAPLAN Numeracy Exam
The NAPLAN Numeracy test is the mathematics component of the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), administered each year by ACARA to students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It assesses students' application of mathematics knowledge, skills, procedures and processes from the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics across three content strands: Number and Algebra (50-60%), Measurement and Geometry (25-35%), and Statistics and Probability (10-20%), with proficiency in understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning. Most schools sit the test online using adaptive (tailored) testing, with multiple-choice, text-entry and technology-enhanced items. Years 3 and 5 sit a non-calculator test, while Years 7 and 9 complete a short non-calculator section followed by a calculator-allowed section. NAPLAN is held within a national test window in March, and results are reported on a scale against national proficiency standards rather than as a pass or fail.
Assessment
One numeracy test per year level. Years 3 and 5 are non-calculator (about 39 questions). Years 7 and 9 each have a non-calculator section followed by a calculator-allowed section (about 32 items each, about 64 total). Items include multiple-choice, text-entry and technology-enhanced types.
Time Limit
Numeracy test time by year level: Year 3: 45 minutes, Year 5: 50 minutes, Year 7: 65 minutes and Year 9: 65 minutes.
Passing Score
There is no pass or fail. Raw scores are placed on a NAPLAN measurement scale and reported against four national proficiency standards: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.
Exam Fee
There is no fee. NAPLAN is a government assessment provided free to all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 at participating Australian schools. (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA))
NAPLAN Numeracy Exam Content Outline
Number and Algebra
The largest strand of the NAPLAN numeracy test. Practice here covers place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, money, number patterns and simple algebraic reasoning, increasing in complexity from Year 3 whole-number work to Year 9 multi-step problems.
Measurement and Geometry
Covers length, perimeter, area, volume, capacity, mass, time and money, plus 2D and 3D shapes, angles, symmetry, location, transformation and scale. Year 7 and 9 questions add formulas for area and volume and reasoning about coordinates and maps.
Statistics and Probability
Covers reading and interpreting tables, picture graphs, column graphs and line graphs, calculating simple summaries such as mode and mean, and judging the chance or probability of everyday events. Year 9 items extend to comparing data sets and proportional reasoning.
