About the AIL DILI B1 Exam
The AIL DILI B1 (Diploma Intermedio di Lingua Italiana «Firenze», Level B1) is an internationally recognised Italian-language certification awarded by the Accademia Italiana di Lingua (AIL), an association of schools and experts based in Florence that has issued the 'Firenze' diplomas since 1984. DILI B1 sits at the CEFR B1 (intermediate) level and certifies that a candidate can take active part in everyday conversations, understand texts of a general nature and express themselves in writing on common topics such as work, study, travel and daily life. The exam is structured around four language skills: Reading Comprehension, Written Production, Lexis & Grammatical Structures, Listening Comprehension and a paired Oral Exam. The objective parts — Reading (two texts with four-option multiple choice), Lexis & Grammar (multiple choice, sentence formation, word-bank cloze and thematic vocabulary) and Listening (multiple choice, true/false and object identification) — are marked against unified criteria to guarantee objectivity, while the written composition and oral interview are scored by trained examiners. Diplomas are graded Sufficiente, Buono or Ottimo. AIL recommends roughly 100–120 hours of focused preparation. The general DILI B1 should not be confused with the business variant DILC B1 (Diploma Intermedio di Lingua Italiana Commerciale).
