About the IWCF Level 4 Drilling Exam
IWCF Level 4 Drilling Well Control is the supervisor-level certification of the International Well Control Forum for personnel who specify, plan and provide oversight of well-control operations, such as drilling supervisors, toolpushers, drilling engineers and superintendents. It builds on Level 3 (driller) knowledge and is assessed by two computer-based multiple-choice theory papers - Principles & Procedures, which includes kill-sheet calculations, and Equipment - together with a practical simulator assessment in which the candidate manages a kick and kill in the supervisor role. The syllabus covers barriers and the barrier concept, risk management, causes and warning signs of kicks, circulating systems, formation and fracture pressure, maximum allowable surface pressures, influx behaviour, shut-in procedures, the driller's and wait-and-weight well-control methods, well control during casing and cementing, and contingency planning. Candidates can certify for surface-only or combined surface and subsea operations, and certificates are valid for two years.
