About the DGS GP Rating Exit Exam Exam

The DG Shipping General Purpose (GP) Rating All-India Exit Examination is the mandatory assessment after DGS-approved pre-sea GP Rating training. Successful candidates can join merchant ships as trainee ratings in deck or engine departments. The online written stage covers GSK (seamanship, navigation, mooring, cargo, safety, environmental care, STCW knowledge) and MEK (engine-room duties, machinery, workshop practice, fire equipment), followed by oral/practical assessment.

Exam sponsor: Board of Examinations for Seafarers Trust (BES), authorized by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

The All-India GP Rating Exit Examination has four separately passed components: GSK online, MEK online, GSK practical/oral and MEK practical/oral. BES publishes sitting-specific notices and admit-card instructions. For the December 2026 repeater sitting, the notice dated 27 October 2026 states that the exact examination date will appear on the admit card; candidates should also contact their parent institute about schedule changes.

Time Limit

About 45 minutes per online paper (GSK and MEK separately). Oral/practical timing is set by BES examiners at the centre.

Passing Score

Pass all four exit-examination components separately: GSK online 45/75, MEK online 45/75, GSK practical/oral 105/175, and MEK practical/oral 105/175 (60% in each), under DGS Training Circular 01 of 2018, Annexure 4.

Exam / Certification Fees

Effective 1 November 2026, DGMA Order 24 of 2026 sets the full GP Rating exit-examination base fee at ₹2,500: GSK online ₹810, MEK online ₹810, GSK practical/oral ₹440 and MEK practical/oral ₹440. GST and other statutory levies apply separately. Repeaters should check the amount shown for their selected components in the BES application portal.
