About the CSMLS MLA Exam Exam
The CSMLS Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Certification Examination is the national, entry-to-practice certification exam for medical laboratory assistants in Canada, administered by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science. It is a single-best-answer multiple-choice exam of 115 questions completed in 103 minutes, delivered through Prometric at a test centre or, for candidates living in Canada, by remote proctoring. From the February 2027 session, questions are based on the 2024 MLA Competency Profile, which weighs the Pre-Analytical Phase most heavily (40-50%), followed by Equipment, Instruments, and Reagents (10-15%) and Safe Work Practices (8-12%), with smaller portions for the analytical and post-analytical phases, quality and resource management, communication and collaboration, and professional practice. The majority of questions assess the application of knowledge rather than simple recall, and the pass point is set by the Angoff method, varying with each exam form and session.
