Frequently Asked Questions
What does the VPOL exam test?
VPOL is an aptitude assessment with four components: Literacy (reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, vocabulary), Numeracy (number, measurement, and statistics word problems with an onscreen calculator), Abstract Reasoning (visual pattern recognition), and a typed Report Writing task. It does not test policing law or procedure — it measures the core literacy, numeracy, and reasoning skills recruits need.
How soon can I resit a failed VPOL component?
There is no mandatory waiting period. ACER lets you resit failed components at the next available booking, but all resits must be booked and sat within two months of your first attempt.
What happens if I still don't pass after my resit?
Victoria Police allows two attempts per application to pass all components. If you don't pass every component by the end of your second attempt, you must wait 6 months from your resit date before reapplying to Victoria Police.
Do I need employer or agency sponsorship to sit the VPOL exam?
No. There is no employer sponsorship model — you register directly with Victoria Police recruiting first, then book your VPOL sitting through ACER. Any eligible applicant (over 18, Australian/NZ citizen or permanent resident, valid probationary or full driver licence, 7 or fewer demerit points) can apply.
What score do I need to pass VPOL literacy and numeracy?
Literacy and Numeracy are scored on the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) scale, and each needs a scale score of 111 (Exit Level 3) to pass, roughly 60% of those questions answered correctly. Abstract Reasoning and Report Writing are assessed separately, and all components must be passed to progress.
Are points deducted for wrong answers on VPOL?
No. VPOL does not use negative marking, so attempting every question — including an educated guess — can only help your score, especially under the tight 20-minute Abstract Reasoning and 30-minute Literacy time limits.
