Micrometer vs. dial indicator — what does each actually measure?
A micrometer measures an absolute dimension (a part's actual size in thousandths of an inch). A dial indicator measures relative displacement — how far a surface moves or wobbles compared to a zero reference — which is why it's used for runout and alignment, not for reading a part's true dimension.

No employer sponsorship is required in the way FINRA securities exams require firm sponsorship. Does the NCCER Millwright certification expire?
No. NCCER certifications are recorded permanently on the NCCER National Registry and do not expire or require renewal. Employers and hiring managers can verify a candidate's credential directly through the registry.
What happens if I fail the NCCER Millwright exam?
Retake policies (waiting period, retake fee, and any required remediation) are set individually by the training provider or Accredited Training Sponsor that administers the exam, not standardized nationally by NCCER. Check with your specific training center for its retake rules before scheduling.
What changed in the 4th edition of the NCCER Millwright curriculum?
The 2021 fourth edition consolidated the program from five levels down to four levels (about 672.5 core instructional hours) to fit a standard four-year apprenticeship structure. Level 1-2 cover foundational tools, precision measurement, mechanical drawings, and math; Level 3 covers pneumatics, pumps, bearings, and alignment; Level 4 adds hydraulics, gearboxes, turbines, laser alignment, and predictive maintenance.
