Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CMSRN exam pass rate?
While MSNCB doesn't publish official pass rates, the CMSRN (Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse) exam is considered moderately challenging. The exam has 150 questions - 125 scored and 25 experimental - to complete in 3 hours. You need a scaled score of 95 (approximately 71% correct) to pass. Results are available immediately after completing the exam. The exam costs $267 for AMSN members and $394 for non-members. Most nurses who prepare adequately pass on their first attempt.
What are the CMSRN eligibility requirements?
To sit for the CMSRN exam, you must: 1) Hold a current, unrestricted RN license in the United States; 2) Have worked as an RN for at least 2 years; 3) Have completed at least 2,000 hours of clinical practice in a medical-surgical setting within the past 3 years. There are no specific education requirements beyond your RN license. You can apply through MSNCB's website. The application fee is included in the exam fee.
What topics are covered on the CMSRN exam?
The CMSRN exam covers six content areas: 1) Cardiovascular (18%); 2) Gastrointestinal (16%); 3) Pulmonary (14%); 4) Neurological (14%); 5) Renal/Genitourinary (10%); and patient care management including safety, leadership, and education. Questions test both knowledge and clinical judgment in med-surg nursing scenarios. Common topics include ABG interpretation, ECG rhythms, medication administration, post-operative care, and prioritization of patient needs.
How long should I study for the CMSRN exam?
Most nurses prepare for 2-4 months while working. Study guides recommend 600-1,500+ practice questions for thorough preparation. Focus on your weaker clinical areas first. The AMSN (Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses) offers official review courses and practice exams. Many nurses use a combination of textbooks, practice questions, and online resources. Your experience in med-surg nursing is your foundation - the exam tests application of concepts you already use in practice.
What happens if I fail the CMSRN exam?
If you fail the CMSRN, you can apply to retake immediately after receiving your score report. You must submit a new application and pay the exam fee again. MSNCB offers a 'FailSafe' program that allows you to take the exam twice within 12 months while only paying once - this must be purchased before your first attempt. First-time retakers receive a $75 discount off the application fee (valid for one year after your first exam date). There's no limit on total attempts.
How long is CMSRN certification valid?
CMSRN certification is valid for 5 years from the date you pass the exam. To renew, you must either: 1) Retake and pass the CMSRN exam; or 2) Complete 90 contact hours of continuing nursing education (with at least 30 hours in med-surg nursing) plus 1,000 clinical hours in med-surg nursing. Many nurses find renewal through continuing education more practical than retaking the exam. Certification demonstrates advanced expertise and may qualify you for higher pay or specialized positions.
