Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the CFPS exam, and is it open-book?

The CFPS exam is a 3-hour, open-book, computer-based exam with 100 multiple-choice questions, administered in English only through Prometric. Candidates must bring an original, physical copy of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 21st Edition — photocopies, PDFs, and electronic versions are not permitted in the exam room.

What is the CFPS exam passing score?

NFPA's official CFPS Candidate Handbook states that NFPA does not publish the score required to pass, and candidates receive only a pass/fail result plus a domain-level diagnostic report if they do not pass — your actual percentage score is never disclosed. Many third-party prep sites cite 70% as the passing threshold, but this figure is not confirmed in NFPA's current official candidate handbook.

How many times can I retake the CFPS exam if I fail?

You may retake the CFPS exam up to two additional times within 12 months of your original exam date, paying a re-test fee each time. If you have not passed after those attempts (or the 12-month window lapses), you must submit an entirely new CFPS application and application fee to restart the process. NFPA's handbook does not specify a minimum number of days you must wait before scheduling a retest — only the 12-month window and two-retest cap.

Who is eligible to sit for the CFPS exam?

Eligibility requires one of three pathways: (1) a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a fire-protection-related discipline plus 2 years of qualifying work experience, (2) an Associate's degree in a fire-protection-related field, or a Bachelor's/Master's degree in an unrelated field, plus 4 years of qualifying experience, or (3) a high school diploma or GED plus 6 years of qualifying experience. No employer sponsorship is required — candidates apply individually.

How is the CFPS exam blueprint organized?

The CFPS exam covers 8 weighted domains: Fire Suppression (22%), Safety in the Built Environment (16%), Detection and Alarm (14%), Fire Prevention (12%), and four domains at 9% each — Information and Analysis for Fire Protection, Facility Fire Hazard Management, Organizing for Fire & Rescue Services, and Confining Fires. This 8-domain blueprint took effect June 19, 2024, aligned to the 21st edition of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, replacing an older 12-domain structure.

How long is CFPS certification valid, and what's required to renew it?

CFPS certification must be recertified every 3 years by submitting 50 professional-development points earned through practice, training, memberships, teaching, or publications related to fire/safety. Certificate holders also owe a separate annual renewal fee each year, distinct from the 3-year recertification requirement.
