Frequently Asked Questions

What does the CDM, CFPP credentialing exam cover?

The exam is built on five domains effective March 1, 2025: Sanitation and Safety (24%), Foodservice (22%), Nutrition (20%), Personnel and Communications (20%), and Business Operations (14%). It contains 160 multiple-choice items (140 scored) over 3 hours and is administered for CBDM through PSI.

What is the passing score for the CDM exam?

There is no fixed percentage; CBDM sets a criterion-referenced cut score using a modified Angoff procedure based on subject-matter-expert judgments of a minimally competent dietary manager. Historically, answering about 70% of the scored items has been required to pass, and roughly 75% of candidates pass on the first attempt.

How much does the CDM exam cost and how is it scheduled?

The CBDM credentialing exam fee is $425. After CBDM approves eligibility, candidates schedule and take the computer-based exam through PSI within their assigned testing window. A new application and fee are required for each retake.

How long do I have to wait to retake the CDM exam?

Candidates must wait 90 days between retake attempts of the CDM, CFPP credentialing exam, and a new application plus the exam fee is required for each attempt.

How do I maintain the CDM, CFPP credential after passing?

Certificants complete 45 continuing education hours every 3 years - including at least 9 hours in Sanitation and Safety and 1 hour in Professional Ethics - and pay the annual certification renewal fee to keep the credential active.

What is the temperature danger zone tested on the CDM exam?

Under the FDA Food Code, the temperature danger zone is 41 degrees F to 135 degrees F, the range in which pathogens grow most readily. TCS foods should spend no more than a cumulative 4 hours in this zone, and food safety is a major exam focus because CDMs also hold the Certified Food Protection Professional (CFPP) designation.
