Frequently Asked Questions
How is the current CNML exam weighted?
The 100 scored items are distributed across five domains: Communication and Relationship Building 25, Health Care Environment & Clinical Principles 18, Leadership 25, Professionalism 14, and Business Skills and Principles 18. This 50-card set uses 13, 9, 12, 7, and 9 cards respectively; the two equal 25-item domains require one card of rounding in opposite directions.
How many questions are on the CNML exam, and how long is it?
The exam contains 115 multiple-choice questions. One hundred questions are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions interspersed throughout the exam. Candidates have two hours to complete the examination.
What score is required to pass the CNML exam?
A candidate must answer 75 of the 100 scored items correctly. AONL reports the result as Pass or Fail and also provides raw scores for each major content category. The 15 pretest questions do not affect the result.
Who is eligible to take the CNML exam?
Candidates need a valid, unrestricted RN license and a baccalaureate degree or higher, with at least one degree in nursing from an accredited institution. They also need either 2,080 hours in a nurse manager or primary unit leader role or 4,160 hours in a comprehensive nursing leadership support role.
What is the CNML retake policy?
An unsuccessful candidate must wait at least 90 days after the most recent examination date before retesting. A new application becomes available after the waiting period, and a candidate may take the same certification examination no more than four times in a two-year period.
How long is CNML certification valid?
Initial certification and each recertification period are valid for three years. Renewal requires maintaining a valid, unrestricted RN license and either passing the current CNML examination or completing 45 hours of eligible professional development during the three-year period.
What was the latest AONL-published CNML pass rate?
AONL's published 2024 annual statistics report a 64.9% first-time pass rate: 411 passes among 633 first-time candidates. Pass rates describe a past candidate group and do not change the current requirement to answer 75 of 100 scored items correctly.
