Success on the CDA Exam requires both content knowledge and effective test-taking strategies. Here are techniques to maximize your score.

Exam Overview Reminder

Time Management

Average Time Per Question:

• 105 minutes ÷ 65 questions = ~1.6 minutes per question

Time Management Tips:

• Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any question
• Mark difficult questions to return to later
• Check time every 15-20 questions
• Save 5-10 minutes to review

Before the Test

Night Before:

• Get 7-8 hours of sleep
• Prepare your ID and confirmation
• Review test center location and parking
• Do a light review—don't cram

Test Day Morning:

• Eat a balanced breakfast
• Arrive 15-30 minutes early
• Use the restroom before starting
• Stay calm and confident

General Strategies

Read Questions Carefully:

• Read the entire question before looking at answers
• Identify exactly what is being asked
• Watch for key words (BEST, MOST, FIRST, EXCEPT)

Key Word Meanings:

Process of Elimination

1. Read all answer choices
2. Eliminate obviously wrong answers
3. Look for answers that are too extreme
4. Choose from remaining options
5. Trust your first instinct (usually correct)

Scenario-Based Questions

The exam includes 5 scenario-based questions:

• Read the entire scenario carefully
• Look at any images or descriptions
• Identify what's being asked
• Apply your knowledge to the specific situation

Example Scenario Approach:

1. What is the setting/context?
2. What is the child's age?
3. What is the problem or situation?
4. What does developmentally appropriate practice suggest?
5. Which answer best addresses the situation?

Answer Every Question

Important:

• There is no penalty for guessing
• Never leave a question blank
• If unsure, eliminate what you can and guess
• Mark for review and return if time permits

Handling Test Anxiety

Before the Test:

• Practice with sample questions
• Visualize success
• Prepare thoroughly to build confidence
• Get enough rest

During the Test:

• Take deep breaths if anxious
• Focus on one question at a time
• Use positive self-talk ("I know this material")
• If stuck, move on and return later

After the Test

• You'll receive your score report
• Results are reported by functional area
• The Council makes the final credentialing decision
• Schedule your Verification Visit after passing
