Before Exam Day: Preparation Checklist
What to Bring
| Item | Required? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Government-issued photo ID | Yes | Must be valid (not expired), include your full name, photo, and signature. Driver's license, passport, or state ID. |
| Secondary ID | Yes | Credit card with signature, bank card, or another government ID. Name must match your primary ID. |
| Authorization to Test (ATT) email | Recommended | Not required at the door, but have it on your phone in case of check-in issues. Your ATT number is in the FSMTB system. |
What NOT to Bring
Pearson VUE has strict policies. These items are not allowed in the testing room:
- Cell phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers
- Bags, purses, backpacks, wallets (locker provided)
- Notes, textbooks, study materials of any kind
- Food or drinks (except during scheduled breaks)
- Hats, scarves, or large jewelry (may be inspected)
- Coats or jackets (stored in locker)
Tip: Leave everything in your car except your IDs. The fewer items you bring, the faster your check-in.
The Night Before
- Confirm your appointment: Log into your Pearson VUE account and verify the date, time, and location
- Plan your route: Drive to the testing center the day before if it's unfamiliar. Know the parking situation
- Set two alarms: One for wake-up, one as a backup
- Prepare your IDs: Place both IDs somewhere you won't forget them
- Get sleep: This is a critical thinking exam — fatigue destroys your ability to reason through clinical scenarios
Arrival and Check-In (30 Minutes Before)
Step 1: Arrive 30 Minutes Early
Pearson VUE recommends arriving 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may be turned away and forfeit your exam fee.
Step 2: Front Desk Check-In
The testing center administrator will:
- Verify your identity — Check both IDs against your registration name
- Take a digital photo — This photo appears on your score report
- Perform a palm vein scan — Pearson VUE uses biometric palm vein scanning at most centers. You'll place your hand on a reader. This scan is used to verify your identity when you enter and exit the testing room
- Read and sign the testing rules agreement — Covers cheating policies, confidentiality, and behavioral expectations
Step 3: Secure Your Belongings
You'll place all personal items (phone, wallet, keys, watch) in a small locker. The administrator will give you a locker key. You'll retrieve your items after the exam.
Step 4: Enter the Testing Room
The administrator will escort you to your assigned workstation. You'll:
- Receive a small dry-erase board and marker (for notes during the exam)
- Receive basic earplugs or noise-canceling headphones (optional — ask if they're available)
- Complete a brief computer tutorial showing you how to navigate the exam interface
During the Exam: What the MBLEx Looks Like
The Computer Interface
The MBLEx is delivered on a standard desktop computer with:
- One question displayed at a time on screen
- Four answer options (A, B, C, D) for each multiple-choice question
- A "Next" button to advance to the next question
- A timer showing your remaining time (visible but not intrusive)
- No "Back" button — you cannot return to previous questions (this is a CAT feature)
Exam Format (2026)
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Total questions | 100 (90 scored + 10 unscored pretest items) |
| Format | Multiple-choice, 3–4 options each (FSMTB introduced 3-option questions in 2022) |
| Time limit | 1 hour 50 minutes (110 minutes) |
| Adaptive testing | Yes — Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) |
| Minimum questions | 100 (fixed-length, not variable like NREMT) |
| Pass/fail | Determined by your performance pattern across all questions |
How CAT Works on the MBLEx
Unlike some adaptive exams that vary in length, the MBLEx always delivers exactly 100 questions. However, it is still adaptive in how it selects questions:
- Correct answers → the next question may be slightly harder
- Incorrect answers → the next question may be slightly easier
- The algorithm continuously recalculates your ability estimate
- Your final pass/fail decision is based on whether your ability estimate exceeds the passing standard
What this means for you: Don't panic if questions suddenly seem harder — that's a sign you're answering correctly. Conversely, if questions seem to get easier, it doesn't necessarily mean you're failing. Focus on each question individually.
The 7 MBLEx Content Areas
Here's what you'll be tested on and how heavily each area is weighted:
| Content Area | % of Exam | Approximate Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Anatomy & Physiology | 11% | ~10 questions |
| Kinesiology | 12% | ~11 questions |
| Pathology, Contraindications, Areas of Caution | 13% | ~12 questions |
| Benefits and Physiological Effects of Techniques | 14% | ~13 questions |
| Client Assessment, Reassessment & Treatment Planning | 17% | ~15 questions |
| Ethics, Boundaries, Laws & Regulations | 15% | ~14 questions |
| Guidelines for Professional Practice | 18% | ~16 questions |
Key insight: The two largest sections — Professional Practice (18%) and Client Assessment (17%) — are scenario-based. They test your clinical reasoning, not memorization. Practice applying knowledge to client scenarios.
Time Management During the Exam
With 100 questions in 110 minutes, you have 1 minute and 6 seconds per question. Here's how to use your time wisely:
The 50-30-30 Strategy
| Phase | Time | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| First 50 minutes | Questions 1–45 | Steady pace, ~66 seconds per question |
| Next 30 minutes | Questions 46–75 | Maintain rhythm, don't dwell |
| Final 30 minutes | Questions 76–100 | Finish strong, use remaining time for tough ones |
CAT strategy tip: The early questions heavily influence your difficulty trajectory. Performing well in the first 20–30 questions sets a higher baseline, so take extra care at the start. If questions start feeling harder, that's a good sign — it means you're answering correctly and the algorithm is testing your ceiling.
When You're Stuck on a Question
Since you can't go back, you need a strategy for difficult questions:
- Eliminate obviously wrong answers — Usually 1–2 options are clearly incorrect
- Look for clinical reasoning clues — MBLEx questions often have one answer that is "most correct" based on safety, ethics, or scope
- When in doubt, choose the safest answer — If torn between two options, pick the one that prioritizes client safety and professional boundaries
- Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any question — Make your best choice and move on. You cannot go back, so agonizing wastes time you need for later questions
Bathroom Breaks
- You can take a bathroom break during the exam
- Raise your hand to signal the administrator
- Your exam timer does NOT pause during breaks
- You'll need to re-scan your palm vein when returning
- Plan to use the restroom before the exam starts

After the Exam: Getting Your Results
Immediate Post-Exam
When you finish the last question (or time expires):
- The screen will display a brief survey (optional — your answers don't affect your score)
- You will NOT see your pass/fail result at the testing center
- The administrator will collect your dry-erase board
- You'll retrieve your belongings from the locker
- You'll receive a printed confirmation that you completed the exam
Immediate Unofficial Results
Here's the part most people don't know: you receive your unofficial pass/fail result before you leave the testing center. The proctor will hand you a printed result after you finish. This is unofficial but accurate — it tells you immediately whether you passed or failed.
Official Results Timeline
| Timeline | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Immediately | Unofficial pass/fail result printed at the testing center |
| 1–5 business days | Official results sent to your state licensing board via FSMTB |
| Result format | Pass or fail — no numerical score (FSMTB stopped providing scores in 2017) |
| If you passed | Your result is automatically forwarded to your state board for licensure processing |
| If you failed | You receive a diagnostic report rating each content area as "Good," "Borderline," or "Low/Poor" |
How to Check Official Results
- Log in to your FSMTB account at fsmtb.org
- Navigate to "My Exam Results"
- Your official pass/fail status will be displayed once processed
Note: The MBLEx is available in both English and Spanish. ADA accommodations (extra time, separate room, specialized equipment) are available — request through Pearson VUE in advance.
What If You Don't Pass?
The MBLEx has a first-time pass rate of approximately 70%, which means about 3 in 10 candidates fail on their first attempt. If you're in that group, here's your plan:
Understanding Your Diagnostic Report
Your FSMTB score report shows your performance level in each of the 7 content areas:
- Above passing standard — You're strong here
- Near passing standard — You almost made it in this area
- Below passing standard — This is where you need significant work
