10.1 California Manual Skills Test Format and Scoring
Key Takeaways
- The California skills test assigns 3 or 4 tasks and allows 30 minutes total.
- One first task is selected from a mandatory group that includes embedded soap-and-water handwashing.
- The candidate must perform all key steps and at least 80% of non-key steps on each assigned task.
- All steps must actually be demonstrated; verbalizing alone does not count unless the step asks for communication.
- Candidates may correct a missed step during the allotted time before saying they are finished.
Skills Test Format
The manual skills test evaluates CDPH-approved nurse aide skill tasks. In California, you perform 3 or 4 assigned tasks in 30 minutes.
The RN Test Observer reads each scenario. Once the test begins, the observer cannot teach you how to perform the skill.
Passing Standard
You must:
- Complete all key steps.
- Complete at least 80% of non-key steps on each task.
- Demonstrate steps, not just say them.
- Maintain respectful interaction.
- Stay within the 30-minute time limit.
Corrections
If you realize you missed a step, say you want to correct it and then demonstrate the correction. Corrections must happen before time runs out and before you finish the skill test.
This is important. A candidate who freezes after a mistake may fail a skill that could have been corrected.
Task Order
Skill steps are not always strict order-dependent unless the instructions say before or after. Still, practice in a consistent order to reduce omissions.
Actor vs Manikin
Most tasks are performed with a live resident actor. Female catheter care and female perineal care are performed on a manikin.
Scoring Mindset
Think in complete routines:
- Hand hygiene.
- Explain.
- Privacy.
- Safety setup.
- Skill procedure.
- Measurement if assigned.
- Call light and comfort.
- Respectful interaction.
- Hand hygiene.
