Can You Take the CBCS Exam?

High school diploma or GED/high school equivalency, or scheduled to earn one within the next 12 months under NHA's pathway rules
Experience
1 year of supervised medical billing and coding work experience within the last 3 years, or 2 years within the last 5 years, can satisfy the experience pathway
Additional Requirements
  • Exam can be delivered by an approved school or proctor, PSI testing center, or NHA live remote proctoring
  • Candidates taking the current CBCS exam are not permitted to bring coding manuals
  • Starting January 1, 2026, NHA exam application deadlines must be at least 8 days before the desired exam date
  • If unsuccessful, candidates must wait 30 days before retesting; after three failed attempts, a one-year waiting period applies
